Open Source Learning

I am one of those who has not yet fully embraced E-readers hanging on to the idea that a real book must be held while its pages flutter in the breeze emitting the real book smell.  Well---when I went out to my garage earlier to find a book I needed, hundreds of books, papers, and notebooks came tumbling down as if I had just lost a game of literacy Jenga.  As I stared at the massive mess, I began to have visions of Ipads, Kindles, and nooks flash through my mind.  I decided to look around at the ideas others have about E-readers and found this YouTube video about a school in California using E-readers.  As I watched the video, I immediately thought about how much lighter the kids' backpacks must be without having to lug all those textbooks around.

  1. I agree that I am reluctant about e-readers. Shouldn't all kids walk to school both ways in the snow, with a heavy backpack? :-) I own a kindle because my husband bought me one. I used it on my honeymoon, and then put it away for a while. When registering for this class, I looked up the Bonk text and realized how much less expensive the Kindle version was. So . . . I gave up my traditional highlighter and post-it note ways and read it on my e-reader. It was so nice to have it when traveling, and being able to sync it to my iPhone meant I could read chapters, even when I didn't have my Kindle with me, and it would keep track of my page. If they can reduce costs, make the load a little lighter, and incorporate color and images in the text, I am a full supporter.

  2. And don't forget, I am sure they are much better for the earth since we wouldn't need so many trees for paper, and E-readers don't create as much clutter. Like you, I like to mark with highlighters and post-its while reading and writing, but for the first time ever, I didn't print my paper (the article critique) out to proof read it. I was quite proud of myself!

  3. As a digital immigrant, I'm still not quite so comfortable with these great devices. I like what I'm learning about the e-readers. The video showed great ways to use the digital text books with interactive videos and practice problems built right in. I do think to use the textbook budget to purchase technology devices might be a good thing - a great way to save the trees and get more technology in the classroom.
